Anne Provoost Discusses Her New Book, "In the Shadow of the Ark," on June 29 at the Library of Congress

Flemish author Anne Provoost will discuss her new book, "In the Shadow of the Ark" (Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine Books, 2004), at 6 p.m. on June 29 in the Mumford Room, sixth floor, James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., in Washington, D.C.

The presentation is co-sponsored by the Library's Office of Scholarly Programs with the Representation of the Flemish Government at the Embassy of Belgium and Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine Books. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are needed. A book signing will follow the program.

"In the Shadow of the Ark," a novel set in the apocalyptic days described in the biblical story of Noah and his ark, provides the reader with an imaginative glimpse at the story of the great flood in an attempt to explore the roots of evil and hope in the world. Provoost describes the doubts and certainties about the coming of the flood and what they meant to the ark's builder and the desert people around him, as well as the loves, passions and rivalries of the ark's inhabitants.

Provoost, who studied literature and education at the University of Leuven in Flanders, Belgium, has received numerous literary awards. She was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature in 2003 and was appointed Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador for 2005. "In the Shadow of the Ark" is the fourth novel of Provoost's to be translated into English.
