Record of the Week

from The National Jukebox

Each week our panel of experts picks a different National Jukebox selection to highlight.

This week’s selection:

"The Oceana Roll" sung by Ed Morton, recorded Recorded July 12, 1911.

Vaudevillian Ed Morton, known as “the singing cop,” specialized in catchy, word-drenched, syncopated songs that he sang in his gruff, but engaging voice. Delightful and nonsensical, this nautical, ragtime-infused performance was perhaps Morton’s best-selling record, abetted no doubt, by the presence of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” on the flip side.
