Preservation—Future Directions Symposia Series

Background: During Fiscal Year 2007, the Library of Congress began its Strategic Plan for 2008-13. The strategic plan for Library Services calls for the Library to revisit and extend the leadership it provided for national and international outreach in preservation during the twenty years of the National Preservation Program Office (1976-1996). The new plan calls for the development of preservation strategies, including the areas of research and emergency mitigation.
Goals and Program Description: The goal of the meeting was to update stakeholders about the Library of Congress strategic planning strategy, and to elicit ideas and feedback to help shape preservation objectives in the Library Services Strategic Plan. After participants were briefed about the program’s background and goals, three focus groups discussed needs and objectives for (1) research, (2) emergency mitigation, and (3) training and other preservation issues. Each group then reported back to the plenary group.
Participants: Participants were senior professionals representing museums, libraries, archives, training institutions, consortia, and funding agencies.
Outcomes: Library planners used summaries of the each focus group’s discussion to inform the objectives in Library Services 2008-13 Strategic Plan working documents. Drafts of the working documents were subsequently shared with program participants and collaborative networks for the achievement of mutual objectives were established.
