Introduction

About NLS

Introduction

This directory was compiled by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, in 2013 from information supplied by organizations, groups, and individuals who produce a wide variety of braille, large-print, and recorded materials for readers who are blind, visually impaired, or have physical disabilities that limit their ability to handle printed materials. The listing is alphabetical by state and then alphabetical by city within each state. There is an index included in the back of the book referencing specialized materials, organizations, and networked libraries for the blind.

Individuals, groups, and organizations that produce reading materials for people who are blind or have a physical disability and are not listed in this directory are invited to submit information for future editions to nlsref@loc.gov.

About NLS

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, administers a free national library program of braille and recorded materials through a network of cooperating libraries across the United States and in U.S. territories. Residents of the United States and American citizens living abroad who cannot see to read regular print or who cannot handle a print book are eligible to borrow recorded and braille books and magazines through this program. Eligible borrowers receive a playback machine and may also receive accessories such as an amplifier or headphones. Books may be received through the mail or through the online download site BARD, through network libraries, once registered with the program. For more information about this directory or the NLS program, including the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD), contact the NLS Reference Section at (202) 707-9275 or e-mail nlsref@loc.gov.
