Introduction

[skip to the table of contents]

Magazines in Special Media is a descriptive listing of periodicals available to blind and physically disabled individuals throughout the country in the following formats: audiocassette, digital audio, digital download, digital text, electronic braille, large print, and press braille. Most braille magazines use contracted braille. Part 1 lists all magazines produced by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, through its free reading program. These magazines are available at no charge through NLS cooperating libraries to NLS patrons. Individuals who are unable to read or handle regular print materials because of visual or physical disabilities and are residents of the United States or American citizens living abroad are eligible to participate in the NLS braille and talking-book program.

The magazines are circulated by the United States Postal Service (USPS) either on digital cartridge or press braille, but some may be downloaded in electronic braille or audio format from the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service at https://nlsbard.loc.gov. Some titles may also be available in large print.

Part 2 lists magazines that are not part of the NLS reading program and cannot be requested from cooperating libraries. The information about these magazines was provided by their producers. Some are offered free, others by paid subscription. In each case, the source for ordering is indicated, and full contact information is given in the Appendix to Part 2. These sources should be contacted directly for the latest subscription information because availability and prices change frequently.

In both Part 1 and Part 2, magazines are arranged alphabetically by title. Some magazines are listed in both sections. In such cases, a crossreference is made from one part of the directory to the other. Magazines can be located in this document by using the title index, the subject index, or any of the indexes arranged by medium. Boldface titles in the indexes indicate that the magazine is produced by NLS and is available through NLS cooperating libraries.

About the Free Reading Program

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Library of Congress, loans books and magazines to individuals who are unable to read regular print because of a temporary or permanent visual or physical handicap.

Thousands of books in braille, on digital audio cartridges, and on analog audiocassettes are available through a network of cooperating libraries. Fiction and nonfiction selections include classics, romances, science fiction, biographies, bestsellers, westerns, how-to books, and many more. Popular magazines are converted into braille and recorded formats and mailed to subscribers. Music services are provided directly from NLS. For more information about the NLS music collection call 800-424-8567, send an e-mail to nlsm@loc.gov, or visit www.loc.gov/nls/music/index.html.

Books, playback equipment, headphones, and other aids are delivered by mail. Book descriptions, bibliographies, and catalogs are also mailed regularly to inform readers of new materials. No postage is required to borrow or return books, equipment, and other materials, and all are free.

Readers may view catalogs and other information over the Internet by accessing the NLS home page at www.loc.gov/nls. Eligible readers may also download braille and audio materials from the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service at nlsbard.loc.gov. Patrons who wish to use BARD should contact their cooperating library to receive more information.

Any resident of the United States or American citizen living abroad who is unable to read or use regular print materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical handicap may receive service. Individuals wishing service need a brief statement describing their disability from a competent authority such as a medical doctor, nurse, optometrist, ophthalmologist, staff member of a health care institution, or librarian.

For specific eligibility requirements and more information, write to the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20542. For fast service, visit loc.gov/nls, send a fax to (202) 707-0712, or e-mail nls@loc.gov.
