Contents: Correspondence, lists, clippings, photos, and other papers, reflecting the activities and attitudes of the Stibbs family during the crisis of secession, the Civil War, and Reconstruction, in particular Union officer John Howard Stibbs, a member of the military commission that tried Henry Wirz, the Confederate officer in charge of Andersonville Prison. Topics include economic conditions; political and military leaders such as Jefferson Davis, U.S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, George B. McClellan, and Clement L. Vallandigham; civilian and military morale; and attitudes toward Negroes and Copperheads. Includes letters of Wesley Williams and his wife Harriet, two freed blacks sent north by J.H. Stibbs and virtually adopted by his parents in Wooster, Ohio, some of which reflect Williams's enlistment in the Union Army.
