Background
James Kerr Edmondson (1832-1898) was a Confederate officer, judge, businessman, politician, and university trustee, of Lexington, Va.
Contents
Correspondence, including letters (1861-1863) from Edmondson to his wife, Emma Edmondson, describing his experiences as a member of the Rockbridge Rifles and Stonewall Brigade, as well as letters written to him as chairman of the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Association, 1885-1891. Many of the letters are printed in Charles W. Turner, ed., My Dear Emma (Verona, Va.: 1978).
In a letter to Emma written in camp near Manassas, Va., on Aug. 7, 1861, Edmondson wrote:
"I am tired and sick of this dull, monotonous, lazy camp life and the only pleasure that I now have is in writing to you and in receiving and reading your letters. If we were on active duty, making a forward movement or something in that way I should be better satisfied and more contented. How long we are going to lie about here in this lazy way and what we are going to do next is more than I can tell. As long as it is necessary for my service for the defense of my country I am certainly willing to give them, but no longer and after this war is over, if I live to see it indeed, I think I shall bid all military matters a long and last farewell."
