Descriptive Cataloging Manual Section Z1 and
LC Guidelines Supplement to MARC 21 Format for Authority Data
The Policy and Standards Division has made available a comprehensive version of the Descriptive Cataloging Manual (DCM) Z1 (updated February 2016) and the LC Guidelines Supplement to the MARC 21 Format for Authority Data (updated August 2015) at the links below.
Note to NACO participants: DCM Z1 includes an appendix with instructions specific to Library of Congress staff that may be excluded when printing.
The LC Guidelines for authority records are used by LC catalogers and institutions participating in NACO or SACO for creating authority records to be added to the Library of Congress authority files. The guidelines may also be used by institutions that need or want to know special LC practice for authority records. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with the MARC 21 Format for Authority Data.
Electronic versions of both documents are also available through Cataloger’s Desktop.
